QV Christmas Tree of Wonder

An all new, giant Christmas Tree of Wonder will be installed in Melbourne city at QV Melbourne’s open-air square this November!

On Thursday 23 November, a new must-see festive attraction will take its place in the heart of the city at QV Melbourne.

Designed and fabricated by globally renowned public art maker Felipe Reynolds (King Kong the Musical, How to Train your Dragon-Arena Spectacular, Walking with Dinosaurs Live), the ‘airgineered’*  QV Christmas Tree of Wonder will be one of the tallest Christmas trees in Australia, reaching 21.5 metres into the sky, and will feature over 15,000 twinkling lights that will illuminate the tree into the night.

Expressing a quintessentially Melbourne Christmas, the tree will feature bespoke decorations including a skateboarding fairy penguin, winged AFL football, Formula 1 race car, Flinders St Station, designer sneaker stockings, a Star Tram Express, Kimono Graffiti Kat, Xmas Noodle Box, coffee cup, tennis balls, croissants and so much more. A tramway winds its way around the tree, up to a Golden Winged Treetop Star.

“The tree image has been used for millennia by so many different cultures, as a symbol of new life and hope. Christmas is about coming together, and travelling to come together. The QV Christmas Tree of Wonder appears like a tramway up into the stars, putting your best wishes and hopes out into the world,” says Reynolds, who helped create the giant ape for the King Kong musical, which went on to win a Special Tony Award for puppet design.

Felipe Reynolds has designed other great apes for artist Lisa Roet, including a nine metre David that sat atop Arts Centre Melbourne, a golden monkey for the Photography Biennale in Ballarat, and a giant gibbon at this year’s Edinburgh Festival.

Designed and fabricated in Reynolds’ Williamstown studio inside an old ship building yard, the hyperreal, multi-faceted tree features native Victorian Christmas bush foliage and angel wings that animate in the wind.

“We have hand sewn 1000s of panels together to create the QV Christmas Tree of Wonder. All of the small very detailed ornaments and larger Objet D’art are individually lit from the inside like paper lanterns, illuminating the tree all over,” says Reynolds.

The Christmas tree installation will be enhanced by an immersive photo experience directly underneath it, in the centre of QV Square. It’s available for visitors to experience from 10am-10pm daily, from 23 November until the end of December. A roster of Melbourne DJs will also spin live beats every Saturday and Sunday from 25 November until 31 December, at 2pm – 5pm. At night, the Tree of Wonder will transform into an even greater visual spectacle with lighting and special effects.

“A lot of imagination and symbolic inspiration has gone into the creation of this tree, but ultimately, it’s the visitors and people of Melbourne who will define it. We look forward to the QV Christmas Tree of Wonder becoming an icon of the city and a new magical sight to visit each festive season,” says QV Melbourne Senior Centre Manager Melbourne CBD, Arabella Richards.

The QV Christmas Tree of Wonder will launch the day before Black Friday, which QV Melbourne is celebrating with its newest experience, QV Prize Parcel Point. Shoppers can simply present their receipt for a chance to win a share in over $17,000 worth of QV Gift Cards from 4pm – 7pm on Friday 24 November, and 1pm – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday 25-26 November.
