Mamma Mia Takes Melbourne by Storm

In a resounding return to the heart of Melbourne’s cultural scene, Mamma Mia is gracing the stage of the iconic Princess Theatre once again, igniting an electrifying finale to its 2023 Australian tour.

With a Mediterranean breeze in the air and the enchantment of ABBA’s timeless melodies, Catherine Johnson’s enchanting narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a Greek island paradise. This heartwarming tale revolves around a young bride-to-be, on the precipice of matrimony. As the eve of her wedding dawns, her quest to uncover the identity of her father summons three intriguing men from her mother’s past, rekindling long-forgotten memories from two decades ago.

Leading this spectacular Australian production is an extraordinarily talented ensemble, fronted by the Helpmann Award-winning Elise McCann as the indomitable mother-of-the-bride, Donna Sheridan, and the captivating Sarah Krndija as her daughter and the bride-to-be, Sophie. Bianca Bruce and Deone Zanotto lend their brilliance to the roles of Donna’s loyal friends, Rosie and Tanya, while Martin Crewes, Drew Livingston, and Tim Wright seamlessly embody the three unsuspecting fathers. Adding to the charm, Lewis Francis brings Sophie’s adoring fiancé, Sky, to life.

This 2023 rendition is a revival of the highly acclaimed 2017 production, showcasing the original work of an entirely Australian creative team, helmed by the Helpmann Award-winning director Gary Young. The team includes choreographer Tom Hodgson, musical supervisor Stephen Amos, set designer Linda Bewick, costume designer Suzy Strout, lighting designer Gavan Swift, and sound designer Michael Waters. The collaboration has resulted in a breathtaking spectacle that promises to dazzle and delight.

For aficionados of ABBA, this production is nothing short of a musical paradise. Expect to be swept away by a cascade of ABBA’s beloved classics, masterfully interwoven into a sidesplitting tale of young love and rekindled passions. The cast, led by McCann and Krndija, delivers powerhouse performances that are both commanding and uproariously funny. The ensemble is nothing short of outstanding, exuding infectious energy, impeccable characterizations, and show-stopping dance routines.

The choreography is razor-sharp, accentuating the vibrant energy of the cast, while the set and lighting, although simple in design, are profoundly effective in transporting the audience to the sun-soaked Greek isle. As the curtains fall, the show culminates in an electrifying crescendo of hits that will undoubtedly have theatergoers dancing in the aisles, echoing their delight all the way home.

A word of caution for the uninitiated: the entr’acte at the beginning of Act Two may catch you off guard, possibly necessitating a quick wardrobe adjustment.

Melbourne is indeed fortunate to play host to a cavalcade of professional productions, featuring some of the brightest stars in the theatre firmament. Mamma Mia stands out as a must-see, even for those who have experienced its magic before. With the new cast and creative team’s reimagination, this production breathes fresh life into ABBA’s timeless music, appealing to both the young and the young at heart. It’s a theatrical journey that will leave you singing and dancing long after the final curtain call. Don’t miss this sensational return of Mamma Mia to Melbourne—it’s a triumph that promises pure, unadulterated joy!
