The much-loved Lightscape returns to the Royal Botanic Gardens, transforming the lush landscape into a nighttime wonderland with a reimagined trail and brand new installations. Perfect for a family outing or an evening with friends, Lightscape is an immersive experience that promises to enchant visitors of all ages.

A Journey Through Light and Nature

Prepare to be dazzled as you stroll through the interactive Submergence installation, lose yourself in the enchanting glow of the Winter Cathedral, and navigate the mesmerizing Laser Forest at Fern Gully. Lightscape’s artistic lighting designs, large sculptures, and synchronized soundscapes create an otherworldly experience that is both captivating and unforgettable.

Planning Your Visit
  • Location: Lightscape is set in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Birdwood Avenue, Melbourne, 3004.
  • Entry Point: The entrance is through Observatory Gate, near the Visitor Centre, directly opposite the Shrine of Remembrance. Note that there will be no second entrance in 2024.
  • Trail End: The trail concludes at Oak Lawn Gate, just 200m from the entrance, and is designed to be travelled in one direction only.
  • Tickets: A box office will be available at the entrance for ticket pickup and queries on the day. Ensure you have your tickets downloaded or printed before arrival to avoid delays.
Getting There
  • By Car: Limited street parking is available on Birdwood Avenue. Due to high demand, we recommend using public transport or ride-share options. If you choose to drive, allow ample time to find parking and walk to the venue.
  • Public Transport: The nearest tram stop is the Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Road. Check for any potential road works that might affect your journey.
  • By Bike or Scooter: Bike parking is available but limited. Please note that bikes, scooters, and other vehicles are not permitted on the trail. However, wheelchairs and recognized mobility aids are allowed.
Key Event Information
  • Dress Code: Dress warmly and wear suitable footwear. Lightscape will proceed in rain, so no refunds or exchanges will be provided due to weather.
  • Food and Drink: Enjoy a variety of food and drinks at the Welcome Hub at Observatory Gate and The Terrace Food Hall midway through the trail. Options will cater to various dietary restrictions. Please avoid bringing picnics or alcoholic beverages.
  • Facilities: Toilets are available throughout the trail. Note that there are no cloakroom facilities, and pets are not allowed except for service animals.
  • Accessibility: The entire trail is on a path and mostly wheelchair accessible, though some sections with steep gradients may require assistance. Contact (03) 9252 2300 to discuss access options.
  • Duration: Allocate 90 minutes to 2 hours to fully enjoy Lightscape. Last entry is 10 minutes after the final advertised timeslot, with the event closing 90 minutes after the final timeslot.

  • Arrive at the start of the trail 5 minutes before your ticketed time.
  • Ensure each member of your party has their own ticket ready for scanning.
