Come From Away – Musical

Standing Ovations for a Truly Inspirational Story

Come From Away has has returned to Melbourne by popular demand, receiving waves of positive feedback from theatregoers who have had the pleasure of seeing this stunning piece of theatre. The ground-breaking new musical is based on the incredible real-life events in the wake of the September 11 tragedy when 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 people from over 100 countries were redirected to Gander, Newfoundland, almost doubling the population of the remote Canadian town. Creators David Hein and Irene Sankoff constructed the piece based off over 100 hours of interviews they held with the real people behind this fantastic story in 2011, on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks after many of the original stranded passengers and crew made the pilgrimage back to the place that welcomed them in a time of great need.

Capturing the generosity and hospitality of the small community of Gander who invited the “come from aways” into their homes, it is an inspirational story of hope and humanity.

This one-act musical has a lot of soul and people have been giving it continual standing ovations for good reason. Not only are the performances of the ensemble cast incredibly strong, but the story is such a powerful one that you will be gripped from the outset, right until the band come out for their bow, creating the feeling of being at an Irish pub as they jig their way around the stage.

The music is very well written and shows the deep Irish roots that exist in Newfoundland with the band playing a whole range of traditional Celtic instruments. The songs are jovial at times and then heart-breaking at others. “Welcome to the Rock” performed by the ensemble and “Me and the Sky” performed by the talented Zoe Gertz are particularly memorable.

The set is simple, yet effectively designed with some clever manipulations and a revolving stage. The cast transform the space continually and demonstrate what clever direction can do for the pacing of a performance.

Full of heart and really highlighting the beautiful spirit of the Canadian people, this is a show that everyone in Melbourne needs to make time to see. Take your family, your parents, your friends and loved ones. You will not regret it. We promise!
